1:48 O scale American diesel locomotive kits

February 2024 - all these kits are now sold out.

GE 25 tonner

2 DOORS DOWN is a range of 0 gauge, 1:48 scale, etched brass kits covering the small industrial switchers ("critters") and short line locomotives which could be found in daily use all over the USA.

The kits are principally in etched brass, with cast whitemetal fittings. They are designed to be motorised using Slater's wheels, Mashima motors, Romford gears and Delrin chain and sprocket drive as appropriate. All these items are available from us ex-stock. The kits are designed to accept Kadee™ couplings; regrettably we cannot supply these.

It is only fair to mention that due to pricing constraints, as well as a lack of information (!), these kits have little or no cab detail at present. Electrical pickups are not supplied in the kits, most builders having their own preference. We will be happy to advise those who may be unsure. Clear and simple illustrated instructions are included.

BOX CAB 23 TONNER This diminutive loco, less than four inches long, is based on a GE prototype first introduced in the 1940's. Ideal for shunting boxcars, cement hoppers and the like around freight spurs on short lines, or you could add a trolley pole or pantograph (not included) to produce an inter-urban.

Etched brass body, with a simple fold-up chassis and whitemetal detail castings. This kit makes an ideal starter project.
Price: £63-00 (UK p&p £7-00, overseas at cost) Sold out

A Motorising pack is available (all parts available separately) comprising Slater's wheels, Mashima 1424 can motor, Romford gearset, Delrin chain and sprockets.

300HP EMD This distinctive centre-cab, twin-engine locomotive was another 1940's product with a long service history, including service on US military railways.
The kit is similar in design to the 25-tonner, but the awkwardly-shaped bonnet hoods are supplied as resin castings.
Due to the long wheelbase, it is suggested that twin motors are used, just like the prototype! Alternatively, some customers have successfully used a single motor and gearbox, with delrin chain drive linking the axles, thus keeping costs to a minimum.

GE 70 tonner

GE 70 TON Bo-Bo This numerous class was first introduced in 1946. Designed for use on short lines and switching, there are examples still to be found hard at work. Two kit variants will be available: current release is the early version with no grille on the hood front and large lamp. To follow eventually will be the later type with front grille, rectangular lamp housing and differing side grilles etc.
The body and chassis are etched in 15thou brass, with detail castings in whitemetal. Clever design enables construction as a series of sub-assemblies, making for easier painting. The motor bogies are designed to be motorised independently, thus providing plenty of power and smooth running.
